To answer Joshua's excellent question .... it depends. If that cheating resulted in Texas Tech getting $31 million in a TV deal, $4 million from being in a college quiz bowl and 60K people paid to sit in a stadium on Saturday's to watch that cheating student this guy would absolutely sell his soul and defend it.

I’d love to hear his take on academic dishonesty in the AI age. Let’s say it’s discovered a student repeatedly (like their whole academic career) uses AI to write term papers, when its use is prohibited. Would a university pres really say “well times have changed” and move on?

Under Texas law, courts defer to the internal affairs and rules of private associations and will not substitute the court’s judgment for the association's decision (such as membership revocation, rule-making, or expulsion) unless the association failed to follow its own bylaws or acted in bad faith. A super majority of the Big 12 directors (schools) already have almost unlimited discretion to sanction Texas Tech. What’s more, they also have the authority to amend the Big 12 Bylaws at any time to specifically require the immediate suspension or dismissal of any school which knowingly plays an athlete who has admitted to placing bets on his own team.
