I've seen a lot of "Individual Development Plans" doing the rounds lately. Most of them are slide decks. Look. A slide deck isn't an IDP. A PDF the coach fills in once isn't an IDP. A template that lives in a Google Drive folder the player has never opened isn't an IDP. An IDP is a living document the player can open on their phone tonight. With goals THEY wrote. Strengths THEY named. Weaknesses THEY are honest about. Pro players THEY model their game on, 2 to 4 of them, picked by them, defended by them. The coach writes one section. The target areas. The specific things we're working on for the next 90 days, with measurement criteria you can actually see. Not "improve passing." Try "70% completion on left foot in opposed work, up from 52%." Then the coach comments. The player reviews. The coach reviews. The plan moves. That's an IDP. If the player can't open it on their phone tonight, it's not theirs. It's yours. I've been writing these for 22 years. The first version was on a piece of paper, for a kid whose family couldn't afford private training and just wanted somewhere to start. I gave the framework away for free a long time ago, it's still on the website. But somewhere along the way, "IDP" became another acronym coaches use to sound thorough. Photocopied. Templated. Archived. Forgotten. Coach builds the targets. Player owns the rest. Anything else is just a slide.
