At six years old, C.J. Edwards finally met his father at an Applebee’s. By the time he was eighteen, he had survived an unstable home, the sudden death of the woman who raised him, and the realization that the systems meant to protect him often failed the people who needed them most.
What saved him were not plays or schemes, but mentors who showed up the same way every day — and a standard that turned his pain into purpose.
In No Shortcuts in the Dark, Edwards takes readers from the chaos of his childhood in Northeast Ohio to the highest levels of the game: coaching at Mount Union during a Stagg Bowl run, serving as a volunteer analyst at Akron, and earning a spot in the Kansas City Chiefs Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship.
Along the way, he became the first Black teacher in his district’s history, was pushed out during the pandemic while caring for his fiancé through a health crisis, and discovered that true leadership has nothing to do with titles or stadium lights.
It has everything to do with Heart, Accountability, and Mindset — even when no one is watching.
Raw, honest, and ultimately hopeful, this is a book for anyone who leads, teaches, or mentors young people — especially the ones who are struggling the most. It’s a powerful reminder that the real work of turning boys into men happens in the dark, where there are no shortcuts.
