Day 20 of 28:
This Black History Month, our Association proudly celebrates Coach Marian Washington. A true pioneer in women’s college basketball and a relentless advocate for equity in sports.
As the longtime leader of the Kansas Jayhawks women’s basketball, Coach Washington built a nationally respected program and became one of the first Black women to head a major Division I basketball team. Her leadership helped elevate Kansas to national prominence, including multiple NCAA Tournament appearances and a Final Four run.
Beyond the court, she also served as head coach of the USA Women’s National Basketball Team, continuing her legacy of excellence at the highest level of the game.
Now, Coach Washington shares her powerful journey in her new book:
📖 FIERCE: My Fight for Nothing Less

In FIERCE, she tells the story of breaking barriers, standing firm in purpose, and fighting for opportunity — not just for herself, but for generations of women who followed.
Her legacy reminds us that leadership requires courage. Progress requires persistence. And impact requires being FIERCE about your calling.
At BCA, we honor those who paved the way and those who continue to inspire us to demand nothing less.
