Growing up throughout my football career, there were times when coaches would tell me not to be nervous. I would do everything I could to fight those nerves, but it never worked. It wasn’t until later in my career that I realized many of the people telling me not to be nervous had never experienced the pressure of playing meaningful football. That’s not a knock on them, they just didn’t understand what I was feeling. Those nerves weren’t a weakness. They were my body’s recognition of the moment. They were preparing me for what was ahead. They were a reminder that the next few hours mattered. So for those of you who get nervous before you perform, embrace it. Your body is recognizing the moment. It’s getting you ready to go to work.
