Tom Brady: “You need coaches that push you outside your comfort zone because that’s how you grow and that’s how you develop self confidence and self esteem. They push you to deal with failure.”

Mike Leach shares what he loved most about coaching and it's all about growth. "A lot of times they're discovering what they're capable of the same time you are." "Everybody can work harder than they think they can. Everybody's a little better than they think they are." Growth starts when you push past what you thought was your limit. "As players grow and develop from one day to the next, pretty soon they can do something they couldn't do before. And they didn't think they'd be able to." That's the job...helping people see what they can't see in themselves yet. "There's a lot of discovery in this business." Great coaches see your greatness before you even realize it's there. The best coaches don't just teach skills - they help you unlock belief. They believe in you and your potential. (🎥 Mississippi State Football)

Dan Campbell shares the mindset that keeps his team hungry, gritty, and working. "The most important thing is that they understand what it took to get to where we were at even last year. And just because we got to that point doesn't mean anything." "So we start over. But it starts over with the work." Success doesn't carry over. You have to go out and earn it every single year. "There is no complacency. There is no entitlement. We go back to work. And that is the focus." "'Cause if you don't work, it doesn't matter...So we put back in the work." Nothing replaces showing up and doing the work. Last year's results don't pay this year's rent.
Dan Campbell didn’t turn around the Lions with luck - he built an identity. It’s called 313 Grit. (📌Bookmark it)

Every training camp I had at Washington State University, Coach Leach would share the same story. The story of two kids. The rich kid and the poor kid. The rich kid has two choices. He can become spoiled, entitled, lazy, and expect everything to be handed to him because he has been given more. Or he can take every advantage of what he has been given—resources, coaching, opportunities—and use it to become even better. The poor kid has two choices too. He can say, “I never had a chance. Nobody gave me anything. The world is against me.” He can feel sorry for himself and use it as an excuse. Or he can say, “I may not have what they have, but I am going to outwork everybody.” He can become tougher, more driven, and more relentless than everybody else. It was a powerful message in a locker room full of people from different backgrounds, different families, and different life experiences. Some guys came from wealth. Some came from almost nothing. Some had every opportunity. Others had to fight for every inch. But despite all of those differences, everybody still had the same choice. You can take ownership and use what you have as fuel. Or you can become victim-minded. You can look for excuses, blame your circumstances, become entitled, and convince yourself that because of what you have—or because of what you do not have—you cannot become what you want to be. It is not about how you start. It is about what you choose to do with how you start. The rich kid can waste what he has been given or use it to build something greater. The poor kid can use his circumstances as an excuse or as fuel. In the end, greatness does not come from starting with more or less. It comes from which person inside of you that you choose to feed. Mike Leach shares a must-listen postgame message on resilience, adversity, and failure. "Nothing is really, really, really fun unless it's hard. Nothing is really fun unless it's hard." "We've got to embrace that things are gonna be hard. We've got to embrace to be excited when things are hard." Successful people don't fear obstacles - they embrace them. "You gotta embrace to be excited about it being hard and playing extremely hard." "Even if you get way up on somebody, you want to be as hard as you possibly can because you're pushing yourself. And all of a sudden you're making great plays, you're doing things that you've never done before." Growth requires discomfort. You have to be willing to look bad before you get better. Then he ended with one line: "Embrace the fact that it's hard. Never hope that it's easy." If you only chase what's easy, you'll never become great. Embrace the hard because that is where growth, success, and character are built. (🎥 Washington State)

"Leach Time" 🏴‍☠️ Before games, Coach Leach had our teams go to the movie theater and watch the newest releases. Why? Sure, he was a huge movie buff, religiously staying all the way through the credits and holding up our buses from leaving. He also loved his movie snacks and was very particular about his popcorn. Early on we used to stay at the Red Lion in Lewiston, Idaho the night before games and go to the theater there. Then we switched it up and started staying in Pullman the night before home games my junior year. But Leach loved the Lewiston theater popcorn so much that he had them prepare a bag and had a younger staff member drive over to pick it up. Haha. But the real reason was to get our minds off the game, relax, and be at ease. He wanted us to enjoy ourselves, have fun, and be loose. Not wound up and uptight about the game. Then we’d come back to the team hotel for our nightly meetings and he’d say: “Alright, it’s football time.” That was our trigger to lock in and focus. The horsing around was over. This back and forth was a constant for our team, ebbing and flowing between “relax time” and “football time.” I believe it was a big reason for our success, helping us recharge and come back more focused and fresh during football time. In fact, I think this same ebb and flow was a big reason for Leach’s long term success as well. While most coaches were grinding in the office 365 days a year, burning themselves out with paranoia, Leach spent his off-seasons in Key West enjoying life outside of football. But when he got back to Pullman, Lubbock, or Starkville, he was back in the saddle during “football time.” I think we could all use a little more “Leach time” in our lives. Stepping away from the grind and truly allowing our minds to relax, be present, and enjoy life outside our work, business, or whatever it is we do so we can recharge for our “football time.” #MindStrength #LeachTime
