Proper planning prevents poor performance. I’ll never forget Coach Fran’s saying, “Prepare for your opportunity or your opportunity will embarrass you.” Proper planning is the key to success. Without a plan, you have no chance for success. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. You must be vision-minded. Having a vision helps you decide what steps to take and how to act. It gives you a clear, intentional target to hit. The great ones plan for everything. The plans are detailed and are just as important as the action. You must have your initial plan and adjustments to those plans for contingencies. Focus on what matters most. Lock in. Prepare meticulously. Outwork everyone. Execute the plan. Go be great!

Winning cultures hold everyone accountable. Each detail is held to a high standard. That’s why our motto is “Rise to the Standard.” It’s a high standard that doesn’t lower for anyone. No one is above the program. The behaviors you don’t allow are just as important as the behaviors you allow. You can’t be afraid of confrontation. You can’t be afraid to hold others to the high standard. You can’t be afraid to make people uncomfortable. “We don’t do that here” is a simple phrase that sets that high standard. It separates the great programs from average ones. Remind yourself, and others, “we don’t do that here” when something falls below the standard. That’s how you build a winning culture. It takes intentionality and it takes everyone. Build the culture and protect the culture, no matter what, at all costs.

If you rely on yourself alone, when you fail, it will crush you. It’s the old adage, “If you want to go far, go together; if you want to go fast, go alone.” The truth is people get further by going together. When everyone is rowing the same direction, the boat moves swift and smooth. When just one person decides not to do their part, or focus on just themselves, the boat gets off course and fights rougher water. Don’t be all about yourself. Resist the urge for personal glory and sacrifice for what is best for the team/organization. Go be great!
