Plainfield looks to replace 22 seniors By Paul Gable - HPG Writer After posting three winning seasons, Plainfield football coach Tyler Bless looks to continue the winning ways this season despite having to replace 22 seniors from a team that went 7-3 last fall. "Many contributed for multiple years at the varsity level in many different positions, but, most importantly, we will miss their leadership and winning mindset," Bless told Hoosier Prep Gridiron. Despite the losses, the Quakers have had a good offseason, dating back to last December when Plainfield hit the weight room with strength coach Randy Vanderbush. "The offseason went really well for us. We really had great attendance, effort and accountability all the way through the last week of May. The motivation from our players has always been there. The way our season ended last year was disappointing, but also has motivated our players to do right, do their best and show people they care. It was great to use our limited contact periods in the winter and spring and really allowed us to narrow down the things we want to execute on offense, defense and special teams," Bless said. Plainfield brings back several talented pieces this season. Offensively, the Quakers bring back Bryce Sebanc, Zander Nattam, Ethan Ellis, Devin D'Amato, Wrigley Matthews, Luke Martin, Michael Fontaine, Coen Vanderbush and Austin Ward. Defensively, Coen Vanderbush, Ty White, and Hayden Hrbek return and are joined by a "number of newcomers," according to Bless. Special teams sees the return of Robert Hansing, Ty White and Zander Nattam. With the calendar marching to August and the start of the season, Bless said the Quakers will look to build off the offseason in the weight room, as well as getting physical reps on the field. "Continue to install our playbook on all three phases but also fine tune the things we need to be successful on a daily basis. We will compete against other schools around the area but continue to focus on us and our daily 1-0 mindset," he said. Plainfield opens the season Aug. 21 against Franklin Central, and Bless is ready to see what transpires for his team. "I am really excited for this upcoming season and the things we have in place for our team. We will need to continue to have a great summer, fall camp and be ready to go week one. If we can stay healthy and put our players in the best positions possible, I like our chances," Bless said.

Some of you guys are camping way too much. If you don’t have a Division I offer after four camps, you don’t need four more camps. You need an expectations adjustment.

I cannot emphasize enough how strong athletic programs can help turn around a campus academically. There may be other ways, but it is definitely a formula that works.

Every player can be a great teammate. You don’t need talent to: - Be on time - Bring energy - Encourage others - Give great effort - Respect teammates - Be coachable These habits build culture. And culture builds winning teams.

Chris Fowler shares a must-listen message on coaching and why it's more than just a profession. "You have been nasty and irrational and deeply personal in your criticism of coaches from time to time. If you're a sports fan, I guarantee it. I've certainly been guilty." "But do you know why coaches choose that as a profession in the first place?" "Almost every single one of them - because they want to help people learn, grow, and improve as people and as athletes. I promise you, that's why they get into it." "Coaching is a calling more than a profession. Lee Corso taught me that a long time ago." It's one of the greatest examples of being a servant leader. It's pouring yourself into the growth of other people. "You have to have what it takes to pour yourself into others in order to make a difference. Not everybody can do that." "Yes, they're accountable for the wins and losses. But consider that so much of that is actually beyond their control. You're accountable for it. You're responsible for it. How much do you really control it?" "Know the grind. What each and every coach at whatever level puts into it - whether you're a coach in Little League or AAU or high school - what they put into that is so demanding on them and their loved ones." The sacrifices are invisible and the criticism is public. "Consider them as human beings when you rip into them." "I promise you, at their heart, they just wanna help people. That's the greatest joy they get out of it." Coaching is a calling. The wins feel good. But watching someone become who they're capable of becoming that's why they do it. (🎥 @cbfowler)

As an AD, I remind our coaches that building a strong culture is often addition by subtraction. One negative attitude can undo a lot of good. Protect the standard at all costs.
