Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. Instead of just acknowledging the day I want to encourage you all to take actionable steps, as well as share some of my own personal experiences. Men’s work is very important to me. Over the years, I’ve faced my own struggles with mental health, and I feel incredibly lucky to have had my partner Mollie, close friends and my family around me during those challenging times. Lots of my closest friends and peers have shared with me recently that they are feeling alone, isolated and struggling with expectations and pressures as they step into fatherhood and take on extra responsibilities for themselves and their families. I know this is a familiar feeling for many. My younger peers and mentees are also experiencing feelings of loneliness, isolation and lack of purpose. Not knowing who to turn to and struggling with the constant societal expectations to be “grinding” or “killing it” and not feeling like they are enough. The reality is, in 2023, three-quarters of all suicides in the UK were among men. Young and older. That number alone is enough to remind us why conversations around men’s mental health matter so much. Conversation is the first step to creating a connection with someone. So today, I encourage you to do one small but powerful thing: reach out to a friend. Send a message, make a call, it could be what they need. I’d also love to explore how we can bring more of this men’s mental health work into esports, creating spaces where players, staff, and fans can talk openly and support each other. As a performance coach, you dream of working with a player like @leojannesson, someone who wants to be the best in the world and actually puts in the work to achieve it. It was his mindset, high standards and dedication to his craft that made him successful and I believe a lot of players can learn a great deal from how he went about his work, a true professional.
