🧵40 years ago today, 4th May 1982, HMS Sheffield was hit by a missile during the Falklands conflict.
Of the 268 crew members, 20 were killed and many more injured.
Adam Lawton was a Junior Seaman on board HMS Sheffield and has spoken to us about his experience. #HMSSheffield
🧵 Following the order to abandon ship, Adam was taken on board HMS Arrow. In part of our series of interviews we have done with people directly involved in the conflict, Adam describes being onboard HMS Sheffield and what happened after it was hit.

Another great day of kayaking for Mick and Steve as they continue on their mission to kayak 650 miles down the length of the UK to mark 40 years since the Falklands War, a conflict in which they both served.
Here they are leaving Whitehaven on route to Seascale. #royalmarines
After a few days of walking, and a bit of maintenance on the kayak, it was back on the water for Mick and Steve today.
They started their day at Maidens and have headed towards Girvan before arriving in Ballantrae 🛶🛶 #falklands40#kayak#royalmarines#veterans
The winds have been too strong to kayak for the last few days, but that hasn’t stopped Mick & Steve. In true Royal Marine style they have yomped over the last few days to keep them on track for the rest of their journey; today ten miles from Ayr to Culzean Castle.

After a few days unable to kayak due to bad weather, Mick and Steve are back on the water again.
Here they are leaving Tarbert at 1pm today and the support crew have just reported back that they have just arrived in Kames on the Isle of Bute.

#Falklands40 The 11 day cruise south to the Ascension Islands involved intense physical training around the SS Canberra’s 1/4 mile promenade deck that encircled the ship. I’m pretty sure I got off the cruise liner fitter than when I got in it! Photo: March to the South Atlantic
Another great day of paddling for Mick & Steve. They’ve made it to Crinan after an absolutely awesome paddle past the Corryvreckan Whirlpool.

After a few days in Oban waiting for the bad weather to pass, Mick & Steve were back on the water yesterday.
This was taken yesterday at Clachan Bridge, also known as Atlantic Bridge.

Today they are passing one of the most dangerous stretches of water in the British isles ‘Gulf of Corryvreckan' 😬 so that should keep them out of mischief 😊

The scenery on today’s leg of the journey was simply stunning!
Mick & Steve are now in Oban. After camping out last night, they are currently enjoying a warm shower and a nice cuppa at Oban Sailing Club who have kindly put them up for the night. #Falklands40#falklands#kayak
The weather isn’t looking great for the next couple of days so they are staying put in Oban until it improves and will be using the time to meet with some of those personally affected by the Falklands conflict in 1982. #royalmarine#falklands#falklands40
Day 2: An early start for Mick & Steve as they set off from Corran on route to Oban.
This 650 mile kayak would be a challenge for anyone, but did you know that Steve is registered blind, adding another level of difficulty to the challenge.

And they are off! Here’s Mick & Steve leaving Fort William this morning, exactly 40 years since the start of the Falklands conflict. They will kayak 650 miles to the Yomper Statue in Southsea, arriving on 14th June, the exact duration of the conflict in which both men served.
