Bangladesh courts have acquitted a Jamaat-e-Islami leader ATM Azharul Islam, man accused of horrific war crimes during the 1971 Bengali Hindu Genocide. The courts overturned the death sentence handed down by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in a war crimes case. He was accused of killing 1,256 people, abducting 17, and raping 13 women during the Liberation War in Rangpur region and was convicted in 2014. His release is another troubling indicator of how Bangladeshi institutions are being misused to give succor to those who target its minorities.
