As well as obverse and reverse tools we also possess edge tools, shown here relating to the 1965 Churchill crown. It features Churchill's many honours, but the decision was taken to omit an edge inscription, to ensure rapid production of the millions of coins.

This pair of counterfeit sovereign dies of 1891 relate to the case of Robert Schmidt, a late-nineteenth-century counterfeiter. Old Bailey records show these dies were presented at Schmidt’s trial, where he was found guilty.

The design of the coinage of Edward VIII was a difficult process for the Royal Mint, as the King had definite opinions with regards his portrait. It is little wonder that the Museum store is full of plaster models and tools relating to his brief reign!
