Michael Baumann and Bert Greiser were captured by border guards while trying to escape East Berlin in April 1989. Both were born in East Germany in 1962 and had never known life without the wall. By the time they began planning their escape, border guards had killed 140 East Berliners at the wall, most recently just two months earlier. 1/4
