For the last few months I've been working on the Black Maternal Health Project with @CollEnc, @Natalie_Denny_ , @LJMU Midwifery and @NML_Muse to see what we can learn from past midwifery care to help fight higher mortality rates for Black mothers in the UK. This poem, cowritten during our public workshops, focuses on Marie Hoover, a midwife born under slavery @CaneRiverCreole who delivered Black and white children over decades in Louisiana. Video by LJMU PhD researcher, Hanna Nsugbe.

ALT Collective Encounters is deeply saddened and appalled by the racially motivated violence that has erupted in the Liverpool City Region and beyond.
Collective Encounters unequivocally condemns the violence and hate that we have seen on our streets. Such actions are never justified and have no place in our society. It is essential that we come together as a community to reject hatred and promote understanding.
History has shown that violence and hate speech never win. Lasting change can only be achieved through open dialogue, empathy, and respect. We call for calm and urge everyone to engage in constructive conversations within safe spaces.
Our hearts go out to the families and communities affected by the loss of life due to the tragic events in Southport. We recognise the immense pain and suffering experienced by the families and the wider community.
Let us unite as a city-region to build a more inclusive and compassionate future.
