Purpose and values matter, creating value matters, and being valued matters. All of these need our constant attention, especially in a world that seems to be drifting under a cloud of ego-driven nihilism.

We can negate some of the negatives of AI if we stand for our values against the dehumanising exploitative use of AI, and continue to adopt and adapt AI in partnership with our communities.

Government funding is one of the most critical aspects of the ecosystem in which charities operate. It's 50% of all charity revenue. Govt grant management needs an overhaul, but any reforms must be informed by active engagement with charities and NFPs.

2025: outstanding highlights, issues of concern, steps forward / back, good times / not-so-good times. In 2025 I continued to be uplifted by the amazing people I get to work with and represent from across the charities and not-for-profit sector.

A CCA call to action for charities and NFPs. Why not prepare a pre-budget submission? If the sector is to be valued and much-needed reforms are to be delivered, we all need to be more active and effective in our advocacy. communitydirectors.com.au/ar…
“CEOs in the NFP sector see the potential of technology and AI. They want their organisations to do better by drawing on new technology. But if the only way they can do that is by reducing services to the community they serve, how does that work?”

The new technology we are grappling with today will be superseded by even bigger changes we will need to deal with, as it has in the past. Charities and community groups, have a critical role to play in shaping what a changed world looks like.

Doing good work is not enough, persevering is not enough, continuing to make the arguments and promote the value of our contribution to our communities is not enough. Even winning short-term reprieves is not enough. We need to be better advocates.

We need a new approach to evaluation in the not-for-profit sector - if we want good measurement of impact maybe we should start with a 'we'll show you our data if you show us yours' approach?

The ATO has tried for 2 years to make the NFP self-assessment policy work but 80% of targeted NFPs have not lodged returns. We can argue about why, but what we cannot argue about is that the measure has failed to achieve the desired policy outcome.
