I like how you can see during this time period furries still seeing themselves as part of the SF/F fandom. Of all the cons to break off from the SF/F community, furry cons kept almost everything near identical from the hotel model, masquerade, art show, con suite, and GoH model.

I've had the idea for a new virtual Artist Alley for artists to host their portfolios and online stores since 2019 and been holding on to this domain name for years. After seeing Moouza & 15 had a similar idea teamed up. This being a central hub and voice for artists is the goal.
Today, I'm proud and excited to officially announce and launch Artist Alley, the artist-first fandom marketplace! Over the last year and a half, I've traveled across the world and sat down with hundreds of artists to ask what they'd want in a marketplace platform that doesn't treat them like corporate products. One of the most vocal and consistent complaints was that ALL of these existing platforms take an unreasonable cut of their sales ("Why does Etsy charge me for making a listing before I've even sold anything?") for doing next to nothing for them, while artists had to constantly worry about getting randomly banned for no reason and having no way to appeal. Not to mention the rampant fraud and scams on those websites, the amount of low-effort dropshipping, and miserable chargeback experiences that discourage creators from pursuing what they love doing. What I've learned from these artists is that the bar to creating a marketplace that doesn't actively screw over its creators is unambitiously low. But why settle for the bare minimum? I spent the last six months developing, testing, and scrutinizing every aspect of an ideal marketplace that truly represents how real artists and vendors today manage and organize their everyday workflow; if artists give their all when they make content for others to enjoy, why shouldn't I? Ultimately, Artist Alley is a statement that creators deserve to benefit from their creations first, and that the platform should fit around the art, not the other way around. One of the core tenets of Artist Alley is that a marketplace platform taking a 0% fee is sustainable in the long-term, despite what these corporations would like you to believe. After all, how are we to know for sure it's NOT sustainable without someone actually trying it? (Sadly I can't do anything about the payment processor fee, but Artist Alley doesn't take anything on top of it.) There are too many features to mention all of them in this tweet, but the idea is that you can sell and buy digital or physical merch, take or request digital or physical commissions, host auctions and raffles, have your orders automatically organized in a trello board, set up multiple stores, and discover talented artists around the world. Check them out for yourself below! I'll probably be posting short videos of all the features in the coming week. And join our community Discord for updates on new features, submit ideas, and report any bugs!

Honestly this is a serious issue, many artists sell alone without helpers for 8 hours straight, with no one to help bring food or watch their tables for lunch or bathroom breaks. On top of that many con centers don't allow artists to bring in drinks or food.
#AnimeNorth2026 The objective has changed.

While often cons allow vendors and artists to bring in food and drink, often there are causes that keep popping up at even established cons where food and water is confiscated. Even if a vendor wanted to buy food in the con center, they have to leave their table for a long line.

Cases like this keep popping up with security and cons confiscating food and water from vendors and artists.
Hey @AnimeExpo whatโ€™s up with the way your vendors are being treated? Yesterday they had to wait for people to finish chatting on their phones and smoking to check in and now this. #animeexpo #AnimeExpo2022

I genuinely miss when being a nerd with nerdy hobbies was stigmatized by the general public. I much preferred being made fun of by normies for having weird interests to now having my hobbies dumbed down by corporate in a vain attempt to appeal to them.

These are very cool insights to a previous era.
I was given permission to go through the archives of one of the oldest Anime Clubs in North America, Animania:The Japanese Film and Animation Society of Ann Arbor Michigan!!!! It was a treasure trove of early Anime fandom, tastes of the time, and even old cosplay photos!!! ๐Ÿฉท๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿฉท

Similarly, there's a convention named after Project A-ko that now goes by just "A-kon".

Why does no one ever mention Space Battleship Yamato/Starblazers when this conversation comes up the first anime convention in the U.S was literally named after it
This isnโ€™t even true for America either our parents and grandparents were being rocked by stuff like Speed Racer/Mach Go Go and Voltron/Golion Robotech/Macross long before but Dragonball has to be the start of everything if you listen to its fans

Please be mindful of your vendors and fellow attendees while In the den and NOT play loud music! Some of us have trouble hearing (like myself ) and itโ€™s hard to hear customers especially when peeps shop in fursuit. #fwa2026
