Today marks one year since the first COVID-19 death in Cook County: Patricia Frieson, a retired nurse living in Chicago’s Auburn Gresham neighborhood. Nearly half a million Americans have succumbed to the virus since the pandemic first reached our nation’s borders. 1/

Cook County celebrates Black History Month. We asked Cook County employees, what does Black heritage mean to you? Kristin from the Cook County Medical Examiner Office shares her answer: Black heritage is a rich history of countless struggles and accomplishments made by a community that I belong to. Personally, I think of my grandmother who shared her story of dropping out of school as a teenager to pick cotton because of limited options for Blacks in the south and she was the one who encouraged me to go to college and medical school because she did not have that choice. Therefore, Black heritage is important to me because it has shaped who I am today and inspired me to do better for myself, my family and my community.
