Thank you to everyone who contributed and joined us today in the glorious sunshine on our guided tour of the old Hafod Morfa Copperworks’ site. Our volunteers were keen to share with the interested and attentive guests the story of Copperopolis.

It was a beautiful day for our free guided walks around the site of the old Hafod Morfa Copperworks today. Two groups were able to enjoy the sunshine and find out about Swansea’s unique industrial heritage and its dominance in the copper industry in the 19th century.

30th April 1909 ‘The Cambrian’ FIRE AT THE HAFOD COPPERWORKS “A serious fire broke out late afternoon at the Hafod Copper Works, but, thanks to the Swansea Fire Brigade the outbreak was confined to a cupola and the roof, the damage being estimated at between £300 and £400.”
It was great to welcome today's enthusiastic group on our guided tour. The amazing weather made it very hard to imagine how the valley once looked with the pollution, copper smoke and slag heaps back in the day!

12th April 1902 “The Weekly Mail - Miss Dillwyn’s Work at Swansea”. Taking over the family spelter works in 1892, Amy Dillwyn spent seven years returning it to profitability and registered it as a Ltd company. She retained the largest share holding and was one of 3 Directors.
5th April 1910 ‘The Cambrian’ “Swansea Fuel workers, dockside labourers and other whose daily calling compels them to handle pitch are becoming alarmed by reason of the spread of a mysterious disease which is claiming victims every day.” (It was commonly known as ‘pitch cancer’).
