I wrote about safety in the field of deep sea exploration and how OceanGate bucked established norms
Includes lengthy discussion w/ Bruce Strickrott, manager and chief pilot of Navy-owned sun Alvin, as well as interviews with @SeepExplorer and @CordesLabhuffpost.com/entry/deep-sea-…
Great summary of vulnerability / resilience of ecosystems to oil & gas: "Given the magnitude of the deep ocean habitats... data gaps urgently need to be addressed and the roles of deep-sea species properly evaluated" frontiersin.org/articles/10.…
Sad day for the families and friends of those lost in the #Titan@OceanGate but it doesnt change my support for human-occupied submersibles like #Alvin@WHOI which took me to 6000m last year. I’d do it again tomorrow!
Some good coverage from @c_m_dangelo on the lost sub. Still holding out hope that the assets on site can find them quickly today. No matter where we go from here, there will always be a place for manned exploration of the deep ocean.
i talked to @CordesLab, a deep sea ecologist/explorer, about the missing sub — the banging noises, potential challenges of a recovery, air supply and more

On #WorldOceanDay2023, I'm proud to share @9brandon's wonderful article, Dubious Economics of Deep-Sea Mining bit.ly/3MWoxn9 - I point out uncertainty & risk of investing in DSM alongside @more_whit, contextualizing @VictorVescovo's insightful and harsh economic analysis
The IRA’s climate provisions are critical to our survival, and proposals to fast-track fossil fuel permitting are unacceptable. They must be off the table for debt limit negotiations. No exceptions. To build a livable future, we cannot default on climate action.
Ironic to see this on display in the building in Oslo where we are meeting to discuss deep-sea coral restoration. “The oil and gas industry learns from mistakes” Do they?
Just realized that it was about this time 30 years ago that I decided to be a deep-sea biologist. Thanks @MLMLmarinesci Fitting that I am on an epic journey of research over the last few weeks including DC, NYC, Sapelo Island, NIOZ, Oslo, then Edinburgh. Science!
Had an amazing time talking about oceanmemoryproject.org with brilliant scientists, artists, and thinkers. Thanks to @SeepExplorer and @RebeccaRutstein for organizing!
"Decolonizing Conservation Reading List (Version 2.0)" This tailored list of readings by @secanno of @ucsb_nceas is meant for non-Indigenous people working in ecology to self-educate on the colonialist roots of conservation science. saracannon.ca/2023/01/23/dec…
Proud to have worked with this amazing guitarist and activist on her project. You might have heard her shredding the national anthem for Dave Grohl during the superbowl... Can't wait to hear more! @DonnaGrantis@OutrageOptimismthestar.com/entertainment/mu…
