Brazil has made a significant move in the global UFO conversation. The country’s National Archives now hosts a major OVNI/UFO collection through the SIAN platform, with nearly 900 documented cases reportedly spanning from 1952 to 2023. The material includes witness reports, pilot statements, drawings, photographs, audio, clippings, and other records tied to decades of unidentified aerial phenomena in Brazilian airspace. As we know, Brazil is not a minor footnote in UFO history. Cases like Operation Prato, the 1986 “Night of the UFOs,” and other longstanding Brazilian incidents have made the country one of the most important regions in the world for serious UAP research. A national government has preserved and opened a large body of raw historical material for researchers, journalists, and the public to examine directly. At a time when many countries still treat this subject with excessive secrecy or ridicule, Brazil’s archive represents the opposite approach: document it, preserve it, and let people study the data for themselves. The International Academy of Astronautics has updated its SETI post-detection protocols for the first time since 2010. Before anything can be said in response to any confirmed signals from an alien civilization, there must be international consultation through the UN and other global bodies. What does this mean? Responding to “them” is not supposed to fall on a lone individual, organization, entity, or country’s shoulders. Simple reason for this is if contact has been made with another intelligence, that is not a local event. That’s a global, civilization-wide one. Also taken into account is the new reality in which contact would occur: social media, AI, deepfakes, mis/disinformation, hasty conclusions, and even researcher safety and verification needs. Important caveat though. These are guidelines and not international law. This is for SETI and technosignatures detected, not UFOs/UAP detected in Earth’s atmosphere. Nevertheless, the message could not be clearer. With regard to contact with another intelligence, assuming such scientific public contact ever happens, there will be more to consider than just what “they” said.
