Defra has launched a major consultation on shooting seasons - and it is crucial that land managers and gamekeepers make their voices heard.
The proposals focus on updating Schedule 2.1 species to ensure shooting aligns with conservation. Red grouse, black grouse, partridge, and pheasant are covered under the Game Act 1831 and are NOT affected.
Key proposed changes for our members include:
🐦 Snipe: Delaying the season opening from 12 August to 1 October to protect late-breeding birds in the uplands.
🐦 Woodcock: Delaying the opening to 1 December. This protects British breeding residents and reinforces the voluntary moratorium already championed by the shooting community.
🐦 Woodpigeon: Introducing a new statutory open season (1 Sept - 31 Jan) to distinguish recreational shooting from crop-protection control.
Your practical experience is exactly the evidence the government needs to hear. The consultation closes on 17 May 2026. Stand up for evidence-led conservation and submit your response.
