From the legal sector to cultural and civic institutions, Margaret Casely-Hayford has had an expansive and impressive career that has led to her receiving an Honorary Doctorate of Arts today. As former Chancellor of Coventry University, Margaret provided our institution with key insight and expertise. Her Honorary Doctorate recognises all her achievements, not just those within higher education. Currently, Margaret is a Non-Executive Director on the Board of the Department for Education. Throughout her career, she has championed young entrepreneurs and advocated for diversity within leadership. She is dedicated to promoting effective governance and advancing democratic inclusion. Margaret has previously held the position of Chair of @ActionAidUK as well as serving as Chair of the Shakespeare’s Globe between the years of 2018 to 2024. She has actively campaigned for the arts, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic where she helped to secure vital support for the creative sector. Margaret’s influence also reaches beyond into education and social mobility. As Chair of the Advisory board at @Ultra_Education, she supports the teaching of entrepreneurial skills. She has been bestowed with numerous honours - a CBE for services to charity and diversity, Honorary Bencher of Gray’s Inn and an Honorary Fellowship from @SomervilleOx, Oxford. We’re so proud to share that our Delia Derbyshire building has been crowned the @RIBA West Midlands Building of the Year 2025. Designed by BDP (Building Design Partnership Ltd), the Delia Derbyshire building is home to our art and design courses and is a collaborative space for other courses within media and performing arts, humanities and social science. The RIBA Awards Jury praised the innovative approach used to combine former buildings with an exciting new extension. They said: "Infilling a courtyard between three 1960s Brutalist buildings with a new social space for the College of the Arts and Society has knitted the formerly disparate existing buildings together and connected the College to the city. Our provost Ian Dunn said it was an “enormous pleasure” to be here in what is an amazing place to celebrate the arts. He says it is symbolic in that the university believes “proudly and fundamentally” in the study of the arts; it’s symbolic in that we work in collaboration in everything we do, with industry, the city, students and partners. He goes on to say that we develop graduates who leave knowledgeable as to how they fit into the world of work but also the world as a whole. It is “a place in which we celebrate our city – this creative, this innovative place that breeds incredible people like Delia Derbyshire”.

Our UK students can interact with people from 162 nations at our main Coventry campus and they may go on to discover that in a globally connected world a peer network that stretches to Singapore, South Korea, Nigeria and China is more valuable than one that ends at Stockport and Surrey.
