Announcing my first book, with my style of longform narrative journalism and philosophy. It's about the clash between governing by top-down rules versus discretionary decision-making, in law, in sports, in the household. Pre-order now. @wwnorton wwnorton.com/books/fewer-rul…

The rebellious youth want the quotation marks outside of the concluding period except where the source itself ends in a concluding period. But: how to be a supporter when I quote something that itself is quoting in the old style? The source: Some say, 'huh.' How to quote this?
57% "Some say, 'huh.'"
14% "Some say, 'huh.'".

The first is a reversion to the old way. The second is an application of the new way, I think, but looks ridiculous. The third modifies the source material (which is against the spirit of the new way). In the wings, the full source: Some say, 'huh.' (p. 28)

Of course these _are_ hearsay, even if a lawyer bills you 0.3 hours to mistakenly tell you otherwise. FRE 801 defines technical terms for federal courts, but it does not control the English language.
*annoying lawyer voice* none of these are hearsay 💁🏼‍♀️

As far as I can tell, 'hearsay' as an ordinary English term predates hearsay-related evidentiary rules by about 350 years. Nonetheless, the lawyers storm in to claim that they own the place!

There must be a term for when technicians borrow an ordinary concept, refine it for their circumscribed purposes, and then impose their field-specific jargon on the rest of us.

Hey! I used to live in Millersville, Tennessee! Looks like they are really thriving there.
MUST WATCH: My investigation of the conspiracy cops in Millersville, Tennessee, gets even stranger. Asked about the reason for my investigation of his department, the chief says: "The only thing I can think is: you are a pedophile or you are covering for somebody that is."
