The rebellious youth want the quotation marks outside of the concluding period except where the source itself ends in a concluding period. But: how to be a supporter when I quote something that itself is quoting in the old style? The source: Some say, 'huh.' How to quote this?

The first is a reversion to the old way. The second is an application of the new way, I think, but looks ridiculous. The third modifies the source material (which is against the spirit of the new way).

Of course these _are_ hearsay, even if a lawyer bills you 0.3 hours to mistakenly tell you otherwise. FRE 801 defines technical terms for federal courts, but it does not control the English language.

As far as I can tell, 'hearsay' as an ordinary English term predates hearsay-related evidentiary rules by about 350 years. Nonetheless, the lawyers storm in to claim that they own the place!

There must be a term for when technicians borrow an ordinary concept, refine it for their circumscribed purposes, and then impose their field-specific jargon on the rest of us.
