Some crocodilians, like this Estuarine crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) live in river-systems that have tannins in the water from natural organic material like fallen leaves and other decaying vegetation, and it will stain a crocodile's teeth. Photo by David White/ Solar Whisper.

Crocodilians are protective mothers. 🐊 They will deposit their eggs in a nest and then guard the nest until the babies are ready to hatch. Photo: Adult Indian Gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) on the nest bank with hatchlings in the water behind them, by Phoebe Griffith.

Crocodilians can be found in a variety of habitats all over the world (except the North and South Polar regions). Some spend their lives in freshwater, while others, like the American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) spend the majority of their lives in saltwater habitats.

Because their bodies need to get rid of the excess salt, they have glands on their tongues that do this. Alligators and caimans do NOT have salt-excreting glands, and therefore spend a limited (if any) amount of time in brackish (half salt/freshwater) and saltwater environments.

"We visited different areas along the river during the day where local communities had reported the presence of the species. At one of these sites (6° 49’ 25.8’’N,69°23’ 40.7’’W), we observed a yellow crocodile, approximately 3 m in length, on a beach surrounded by small bushes."
