My orientation about this topic changed in 2019 when I was discussing with a friend of mine who happened to be a lady. She said one statement that shocked me. She said, do you know if we are having sex and enjoying it now, I can come back in the future to accuse you of rape?
Let me share a story from my NYSC days.
Back in camp, there was a lady I was quite close to. I was the platoon president, and we naturally bonded. After camp, she was posted to Warri, while I got posted to Asaba because I made the Delta State NYSC football team as a goalkeeper.
One day, she decided to visit me from Warri. The plan was simple, she would come, spend time, and sleep over.
She arrived.
We talked.
We laughed.
We spent about five hours together.
Then, unexpectedly, she said she wanted to leave.
I don’t know why, but I allowed her. No pressure. No argument. I just respected her decision.
From that day, everything changed.
Her attitude toward me became cold. We were no longer as close, and I couldn’t understand why. Then one month, during NYSC clearance, I ran into her friend and that was when I got the shock of my life.
Her friend told me that the lady had gone back to her lodge that day and complained that I wasn’t man enough.
Her reason?
She expected me to touch her, make a move, make her want it. You know how most women are, they expect the man to make them want it, as if she is about to do you a great favor .
But I behaved like a gentleman and that wasn’t what she wanted.
I was deeply disappointed.
I genuinely respected this lady. I never imagined she would go around telling people that story about me. Who else had she told? What conclusions had they already drawn?
When I got home, I told my guys. They laughed and said,
“Presido, you no know say if a lady visits you, she wants sex?”
That statement didn’t sit well with me.
Yes, many men will relate to this reality. We always believe that once a lady agrees to visit us she want it.
I have sat down with men and they all gave testimonies about how a lady visited them and when they tried to touch them, the ladies will decline many times but will eventually give in and confess after that she really needed it but she wanted him to push for it .
Thus, men believe that a ladies No means Yes. God forbid no be me o. Make I dey beg woman for wetin she self go enjoy pass me.
But here’s my fear and it’s a real one.
In a world where consent matters (and it absolutely should), I don’t ever want to be in a situation where someone says I touched them or slept with them without their consent. Yes, Sex without consent is rape o.
It's means you can even be doing it and if she says No I don't want again, if you continue na rape oo. Oh chineke!!!
I personally know a case where a lady reported her ex to the police for rape not because it happened, but to get back at him. Before he could prove his innocence, baba don sleep inside cell for many weeks.
Let me be very clear:
Rapists exist, and they deserve the strongest punishment. No excuses.
But we must also talk about the other side.
We live in a society where:
- The male child is rarely protected
- A man can’t easily report rape and be taken seriously
- False accusations can destroy lives, careers, and families
- Women use rape accusations as a weapon against men
Some men have lost everything.
Some have taken their own lives because of false rape accusations.
That is why I strongly believe this conversation matters.
Justice should protect real victims and also protect innocent people from false accusations.
Both must be taken seriously.
This is not about gender wars.
It’s about truth, fairness, and accountability.
Shalom 🙏
