Ini lebih dari sekedar rebranding, ini adalah upaya untuk menjelaskan: Seberapa besar TAM (Total Addressable Market) yang dimiliki Telegram.
Sedikit kilas balik.
Pada Oktober 2019, SEC menggugat Telegram dengan tuduhan bahwa penjualan token GRAM merupakan penawaran sekuritas yang tidak terdaftar. Setelah proses hukum yang panjang, proyek tersebut secara efektif dihentikan pada 2020.
Telegram kemudian menyelesaikan kasus tersebut dengan membayar denda US$18,5 juta, mengembalikan sekitar US$1,2 miliar kepada investor, dan secara resmi meninggalkan proyek blockchain yang mereka bangun.
Pada 2021, komunitas yang dipimpin oleh Anatoliy Makosov dan Kirill Emelyanenko melanjutkan pengembangan melalui inisiatif "Newton".
Pada Mei 2021, komunitas membentuk TON Foundation, meluncurkan TON Mainnet, dan mengubah nama proyek dari Telegram Open Network menjadi The Open Network.

IMO, alasan utama di balik kembalinya branding GRAM bukan sekadar nostalgia terhadap identitas awal proyek.
Ini adalah cara untuk mengingatkan pasar bahwa thesis terbesar TON bukan blockchain-nya. Thesis terbesar TON adalah Telegram.

▫ Bagaimana jika GRAM berhasil mengonversi 1%, 5%, atau bahkan 10% dari 1 miliar pengguna Telegram menjadi pengguna on-chain?
▫ Bagaimana jika GRAM kembali membuka akses yang lebih luas bagi developer di luar ekosistemnya untuk membangun dan memanfaatkan infrastruktur Telegram Mini Apps (TMA)?
Jika salah satu dari dua skenario ini terjadi, maka yang sedang dinilai pasar hari ini mungkin bukan potensi akhirnya, melainkan baru sebagian kecil dari total peluang yang tersedia.

Zoich was created by Egor Zhgun in 2010, prior to his well known contributions to @telegram's official stickers.
During an official competition to select a mascot for the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games, Egor submitted Zoich and uploaded what would end up becoming his first viral YouTube video. Zoich was voted first within minutes with 24,000 entries across Russia.
It was later found out that Zoich was used as a "guerilla marketing campaign" by the Sochi Olympic Committee to go viral. The frog indeed, went viral.
As all iconic memes do, Zoich's message spread in unexpected ways. It took off as a symbol of opposition, as an emblem protesting Russian corruption in the lead-up to the Sochi games. Zoich was widely recognized especially among young opposition activists who were in the midst of massive protests against the Putin-led government.
A few years after Zoich was created, Egor started working with Telegram and created countless characters and art that shape its culture today.
One can't help but wonder if @durov was inspired by Zoich early on, and if Egor and Telegram would have ever crossed paths without the frog.
