Imagine how this scene would look if the girl was reading a book side-by-side with her grandmother instead. I bet they both would get more out of it. The majority of adult readers I’ve surveyed name a family member (or teacher/librarian) as an influence on their reading lives.
It’s a rhetorical question. The purpose of reading has become tests and answers. Readers are absent from the conversation. Educators, fearing mandates (the struggle is real), feel forced into unethical and inhumane practices. It’s clearly not raising test scores or readers.
Sitting in a hotel restaurant. A girl about 8 is at the table next to me with her grandmother, who is trying to help w/ homework—reading passages on an IPad and answering questions. You can see the little girl is tired & bored. G’ma, too. Why do educators do this to families?
#UTSACOEHD Some of the awesome Roadrunners that helped make #McDermottLegends Family Fun Night....fun! They even held up the background for the photo booth when it started falling down.
The best part of my day! Seeing my fifth graders engage with their #PercyJackson texts thanks to @CtrInqLiteracy Students are using 1-1 technology, Google Classroom, and good ole paper pencil to engage with the text. #saisd@SarahKingSAISD
