Really glad I've benchmarked this before putting this into production! Turns out the "improved" version is over 500x slower. 😅

To give more context: this is about a routine that parses tags, emojis and our custom mention format like `@[userId:123]` I've created tokenizers to plug into micromark (aka remark) for parsing markdown.

I've tried to apply these tokenizers for non-markdown strings now. And turns out they're no match for the old regexes I've been running before. There can be several hundreds of these strings on the screen. So the new version won't go live like that 🙅

It: - is fully open source: github.com/danielberndt/buil… - has a hand-picked dictionary of ~1700 words - works offline - was a great learning opportunity for me to dabble into the intersection of games and web dev

A lot of stuff I've got to learn working on it: - doing my first ever Twitch stream - using Cloudflare as a cache-layer - css & ui component architecture with dark mode support - orchestrate animation chains - small footprint by using preact and vanilla-extract

4. Live coding is a rather effective for getting things done! Being driven to show something visible and interactive helps at not over-architecting your app. Having tangible results early on is super motivating! Skip the design-system, etc. Just get *something* on the screen!

To sum it up, I've learned a lot and I feel it's worth exploring it more. So... I'm going to do it again 😊 Most likely tomorrow late afternoon CET.
