Good morning Mzansi 🇿🇦 At 15:00 this afternoon, I will be responding to oral questions in the National Assembly. Oral questions are an important mechanism for accountability, transparency and public oversight in our democracy. They provide Members of Parliament with an opportunity to engage the Executive on matters affecting the basic education sector and the learners we serve. Delegates from La Réunion and the French Embassy visited Phoenix Technical School in KwaZulu-Natal to gain first-hand insight into South Africa’s technical and vocational education system and the implementation of the Three-Stream Model. During the visit, school management showcased Phoenix Technical School's specialised technical curriculum, which focuses exclusively on technical disciplines. Learners are equipped with practical skills in fields such as electrical technology, power systems, digital electronics, welding, metalworking, fitting and machining, automotive technology, and civil technology. Delegates also learned about the school's strong emphasis on Engineering Graphics and Design, where learners develop technical drawing skills before progressing to computer-aided design (CAD), a key competency for aspiring engineers. The engagement provided an opportunity for meaningful discussions on vocational education and skills development. Delegates shared experiences and explored common challenges, including ensuring that vocational training adequately prepares learners for the workplace and creating opportunities for young people who may not follow traditional academic pathways. The visit highlighted the important role that technical and vocational education plays in developing future-ready skills, expanding employment opportunities and supporting economic growth through a skilled workforce.

Discussions on investment and partnership opportunities took centre stage as delegates explored avenues for collaboration in skills development and vocational training. The engagement highlighted the importance of building strong partnerships that support the development of schools, enhance student training and create pathways into employment. Areas identified for potential collaboration included hospitality, tourism, energy and agriculture, with participants sharing experiences and lessons from similar initiatives implemented in other countries. The delegation also visited Elangeni TVET College, where they were introduced to the institution's expanding programme offerings and its contribution to the Three-Stream Model. Operating across nine campuses, the college continues to broaden opportunities for young people through engineering trades, Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) programmes, Information Technology, and agricultural training initiatives. Of particular interest was the college's expansion into maritime and aviation studies. Elangeni recently introduced KwaZulu-Natal's only Aircraft Maintenance Mechanic qualification for ground maintenance in partnership with industry stakeholders. The college is also developing a Shipbuilding and Boat Repair qualification through collaboration with local and international partners, with plans to establish a Centre of Excellence for Ship Repair and Boat Building. These initiatives demonstrate the growing role of technical and vocational education in equipping learners with future-focused skills while strengthening links between education, industry and economic development. #GovZAUpdates #ThreeStreamModel #MST
