Two men from Sunderland have landed fines and costs of over £1,250 for using an unlicenced gill net in the River Wear.
They only caught one sea trout on this occasion but the net could have been deadly to any wildlife entangled in it.
Report illegal fishing 24/7 to 0800 807060.
ALT The illegal gill fishing net was found in a carrier bag along with plastic bottles that had been used as a float for the net.
From the surface, the bottles look like discarded rubbish and help to hide what lies beneath in the water.
The unlicenced net had been used in the River Wear - one of the best sea trout and salmon rivers in England - at Stanhope in Upper Weardale.
ALT The seized sea trout was found in a supermarket shopping trolley.
Darren Lascelles, 50, of Cheltenham Road and Ben Thomas Taylor, 43, of Kingsland Square have been successfully prosecuted by the Environment Agency for using an unlicenced gill fishing net to catch the fish.
ALT The seized sea trout was weighed and measured. It weighed in at 2.5 kilos.
Coarse fishing close season begins on Sunday.
