DEED: Development through Empowerment, Entrepreneurship, and Design is a research lab at #Parsons and @TheNewSchool that supports artisans in emerging economies
Wonderful keynote from @nettieb on @DELconference's Day 2. "Who gets to make? Who gets to code? Who gets to design?" reminds me of @Cursoremplumado's critique of the term "non-designers."
Also loved seeing the work with Gee's Bend *as math* *as making*! cc @DEEDLab#DEL22

We are delighted to serve as knowledge partners to @200MArtisans’ important research “Business of Handmade,” which explores the relationship between the informal and cultural economies by studying 12 creative and social enterprises working in India's artisan sector.
Some of the questions guiding our conversation include - Are there advantages to keeping the informal sector “informal”?
- How does such a large economy thrive through informality?
- What are the new roles that perhaps emerge in this “new formal” (e.g. gender or otherwise)?
Happening today at 7.30 pm IST!
In the first of @DEEDLab's deep dives into our #BusinessofHandmade research, @LawsonJaramillo will be hosting a discussion on 'Co-Creation and Intellectual Property' in the artisan sector.

Who gets to call themselves a "designer"? Who do we, as designers accept as a "designer"? How are we, as educators, perpetuating a potentially classist framework that protects the label "designer"?
