The DEG Mods domain,
degmods.com, is now potentially under threat of suspension, as a result of an unjust demand from the New Zealand government to take down a particular mod.
The specific demand:
"You must remove, or prevent access by the New Zealand public to, the online publication as soon as is reasonably practicable after receipt of the notice and no later than Wednesday, 25 February 2026 5.00pm NZST."
We have received this demand on the 26th, a day after than the requested deadline to take down the game mod post. This would mean that it have been impossible to have completely complied with said unjust demand to begin with.
Also, considering their statement of "prevent access by the New Zealand public", it would be reasonable to assume and expect that they should block access to the game mod post link, or even the whole site, themselves, not to unjustly demand us to do so. Considering their demand and reasoning, they seem have failed to take action of protecting their citizens of what they deem they need protection from by simply not blocking the link.
The mod in question is definitely horrible, one that is a recreation of sorts of a real-life event, however, from what we can tell (if we're not mistaken), it does not expose information of real people that would directly lead to the harm of real individuals. It seems to be no different than any other game or mod that has represented real events from human history.
We would usually not take moderative action against this mod post, as DEG Mods is not under the jurisdiction of where the demand is coming from, however (and keep reading, this scenario was accounted for), to continue having the
degmods.com operational, the mod post will be hidden/marked/blocked from initial viewing/access, if it hasn't already, however, we do not have the power to delete it, because of the nature of what we've built with the infrastruture we've utilized, as such, users can easily bypass such moderational efforts and still able to view the post, either on the site via a settings toggle, another site with different moderation standard, or locally by downloading the site and accessing it without needing a domain (this would be done by more technically knowledgable people, but we'd also make this easy for normal people as well down the line).
With that said, if even after this they would still consider this to be not enough of a moderation effort, even though we've done what we can reasonably do considering the technology used, and the domain does get unjustly taken down as a result, in terms of retaining a "vist the DEG Mods website" experience, we have been working on an alternative permanent solution to the ICANN-DNS domain problem in inticipation of such scenarios, where one could acquire not only a domain, but a Top Level Domain (TLD), at incredibly low cost, no conflict of interest in this protocol, done in a permissionless and decentralized way as it grows, with a censorship-resistance property. Meaning after you acquire a TLD for a few cents to a around a dolar (no recuring payments, no expiration), no one is able to take down any of its domains but the owner of it, have many domains at no additional cost, and you don't need anyone's permission to do any of this.
(You can see a demo of this in-development freedom domain system as a reply to this post)
