Today on Volts: I talk with @James_McGinniss of @TheDavidEnergy about "plug-in DERs," which require no permissions or permits. He's selling plug-in batteries to small businesses in NYC, simply to reduce their bills, & he is *extremely* bullish on the future of this category.

Distributed energy, at least when grid-connected, has always required extensive permission from the local utility and government. But there’s a new class of distributed energy resources that don’t need an interconnection agreement or permit.

On the same day @realDonaldTrump makes clear he intends for hyperscalers to bring their own power, we’ve posted the discussion on that very topic from DERVOS 2025 featuring: @Google @Tesla @VicShao (a legendary DER entrepreneur) @ScaleMicrogrids

I think I’ve been asked about this over 1000 times. It’s not economically sensible at small scale and would vaporize Earth at large scale 😂

The Sun is the limit. Even if there were another source that could compare in abundance, we still couldn't use more energy than we get from the Sun. The limit is not how much energy we can get, but how much energy Earth can get rid of (via radiation). We can use other energy sources, but every joule of heat we generate has to be balanced by a joule of sunlight we reject. We can either harness the power of the Sun, or reject it.
Solar is everything, nothing else compares. Not even nuclear.

Did you know that 1/2 the cost of power in the US is transmission & distribution? With solar, you don't have to move power around.☀️Solar energy = wireless fusion power. h/t @JessePeltan @DER_Task_Force 👉 Don't miss this inspiring keynote from DERVOS: dertaskforce.com/p/dervos-20…

Anyone on here live in NYC and participate in Con Ed's "Smart usage partner" program? (basically a demand response program)? Curious which partner you went with and about your experience! (CC @DER_Task_Force?)

On the @DER_Task_Force podcast, @fraderT highlights how FLEX programs keep customers in control and make the grid stronger. Higher NPS, predictable opt-outs, and scalable participation — it all adds up. Listen to the full podcast: dertaskforce.com/p/der-start…

From thermostats to EVs, clear value and simple offers are what get customers to say “yes.” That’s how demand flexibility scales. Watch more from @fraderT’s conversation on the @DER_Task_Force podcast: dertaskforce.com/p/der-start…
