Flowers belong at the center of our creation story. Writing this book transformed how I experience, think about, and feel the world. I hope it will do the same for you. Publishers Weekly: "deep research and lyrical prose…astonishing" penguinrandomhouse.com/books…

Flowers! In stores March 2026. When flowers appeared on planet Earth, nothing was ever again the same. In this book, I celebrate the many ways that flowers build, sustain, and animate the living world, human life included.

Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. We must remember that it did not start from gas chambers. This hatred was gradually developed by humans. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder. Auschwitz took time.

#atlanta #conyers #decatur, chemical fire still burning. No info on what chemicals are being released. The county says "shelter in place if the plume moves over your vicinity" -- not reassuring. Yesterday the air was burned-plastic/chlorine odor

This morning, more than 1.5 million women in Iowa woke up with fewer rights than they had last night because of another Trump Abortion Ban. In November, we will stop Trump’s extreme abortion bans at the ballot box.

5am wake-up from wood thrush while in my tent. Hit record on my recorder, then dozed off. On downloading recording, my breath was weirdly and wonderfully synched with the song. Sleeping outside or w/open window, surely these voices stitch themselves into our subconscious.

The same connection is present with trees, I think. The dream state of napping under a tree is very different from normal dreamtime. Would that we had more safe spaces to sleep beyond our walls.

Seeking examples of non-human mammals seeking out flowers for their aroma. There are plenty of flower-eating primates (and other herbivores munching flowers) and flower-pollinating bats. I'm looking for non-food-oriented flower-smelling behaviors. Thank you!

Love songs that predatory birds can’t hear. I recorded (contact mic) and photographed these red-banded leafhoppers right outside our kitchen door, on some fireweed and roses. Graphocephala coccinea, native to North and Central America. Each insect is about 6 millimeters long. 1/2

Many insects duet by sending vibratory pulses through the leaves that they’re standing on. They hear one another through their legs. Inaudible in air, these vibrations shoot through plant material, linking insects in a network of song.
