On November 15, 1836, Lorenzo de Zavala died. A proponent of democratic reforms, he helped draft the first Texas constitution, served as first vice president, and is believed to have designed the first Texas flag. This reproduction of that flag was donated by Joe M. Dealey, Jr.

On this day in 1886, the Texas State Fair opened in north Dallas. A rival organization, the Dallas Exposition, opened its first fair the following day. The two groups later merged to form the Texas State Fair and Dallas Exposition, eventually becoming the State Fair of Texas.

Today in 1919, the League of Women Voters of Texas formed in San Antonio. Items from the Jessie Daniel Ames Collection (1st LWVT President) are currently on display in the Hall of State.
