Different Greek regions can be as genetically distant from each other as they are from some neighboring populations. For example, a Dodecanese Greek may be closer to a Lebanese Christian than to a Greek from Macedonia.
Population genetics are overlapping clusters and continuums, not rigid ethnic boxes.

If anyone is wondering why the mainland Greeks are slightly away form everyone else itβs because the Slavic migrations increased the genetic distance between many mainland Greek populations and the eastern Mediterranean. Without that medieval Slavic ancestry, mainland Greeks would likely cluster noticeably closer to island Greeks, Anatolian Greeks, Cypriots, and other eastern Mediterranean populations than they do today.
