ALT While some learning experiences can be shifted to fully online formats, others require real-world interactions within specific facilities for practical learning outcomes to be realized. This presentation aims to outline the principles of instructional design and media development that can be used to meaningfully integrate virtual and real-world experiences, so that the two are mutually supportive in ways that enhance learning. These instructional design principles draw from several areas, including learning from media, place-based education, and community-focused pedagogies. Examples from work done with formal and informal educators during the COVID-19 pandemic will be used to illustrate the applications of these principles. A framework of meta-knowledge - originally designed for the training of trainers - will be used to outline additional considerations that contribute to successful instructional design and delivery.
