Most people think leadership is something you turn on at work. It’s not. Leadership is a standard. And standards travel with you. If you want to know someone’s character, don’t watch them on stage. Watch them in the parking lot. Do they return their shopping cart? Do they pick up the piece of trash that isn’t theirs? Do they leave the conference room cleaner than they found it? Those small moments reveal big truths. High performers don’t do the right thing because someone is watching. They do it because it’s who they are. Because their standard doesn’t change based on convenience. Leaving every place better than you found it isn’t about the cart. It’s about ownership. It’s about discipline. It’s about respect for other people. And when you practice that mindset in the “little” areas of life, it shows up in the big ones — in your leadership, your relationships, and your results.
