Jamie Carragher on Ousmane Diomande's performance against Ecuador national football team amid links with Liverpool F.C.:
🗣️ “I thought Diomande was outstanding against Ecuador. Physically dominant, aggressive in the duels, calm on the ball, and he looked like a player who enjoys responsibility rather than hiding from it.
That's exactly why the biggest clubs are looking at him. When you perform like that on the World Cup stage, people pay attention very quickly.
But here's where I have to be careful. I've seen the numbers being mentioned, and honestly, I think they're getting out of control.
We're talking about a very talented young defender, yes. But we're also talking about a player who has barely played 50 senior matches in his career. That's the reality.
One great World Cup performance doesn't suddenly make you worth a ridiculous fee. Potential is valuable, but proven consistency is what separates good signings from expensive mistakes.
If Liverpool are seriously interested, then they need to make sure they're paying for the player he is today, not the player people think he might become in three or four years.
That's the danger with young talents. Everyone falls in love with the upside and forgets the risk.
I really like Diomande. In fact, I think he has all the tools to become one of the best centre-backs in Europe. But if the price tag keeps climbing after every good game, Liverpool could find themselves paying superstar money for a player who is still learning his trade.
And trust me, at a club like Liverpool, talent alone isn't enough. When you're carrying a massive transfer fee, people expect you to perform like a world-class player from day one.”
