The press botched this story. Back in 2011, reporters lazily framed the budget repair bill solely as an assault on workers rather than a structural fix for a massive deficit. The positive outcomes, including stabilized local budgets, have been underreported ever since.

Reporters should stop being stenographers for the candidates they like and instead ask follow-up questions. Even a lame “What would you say to critics who say this will cause massive property tax hikes?” would be a step up.

Before Governor Scott Walker even introduced Act 10, I wrote about the urgent need for that reform. When the state Capitol was swallowed by weeks of protests, I was there covering the chaos. In the years that followed, I explained that, “It’s working!” This progress is at risk.

Act 10 stabilized state budgets & those in local governments across Wisconsin. The results are not a matter of opinion; they are $35 billion in savings baked into fifteen years of state history. But we are about to go back to the days of service cuts, tax hikes and layoffs.

Still zero transparency on this. Where are the other media outlets who champion open government once a year during “Sunshine Week?” There are 51 other weeks every year. DPI’s “Portrait” of Secrecy: Why Won’t the State Reveal Its Education Committee? dairylandsentinel.com/dpis-p…

Between the activist Wisconsin Supreme Court and many candidates running to the left in primaries, Act 10’s days are likely numbered. Reversing this reform removes the primary tools that governments use to manage their health insurance and pension costs. This would be a disaster.

Repealing Act 10 will disproportionately hurt seniors, and young homeowners as property taxes will soar. Younger public sector employees will be the first on the chopping block and there will be fewer cops and firefighters focused on public safety. Buckle up, Wisconsin.

I’ve been part of a family household that includes public sector employees most of my adult life, and have felt the impact of paying a bit more for fewer benefits. But I also remember the path the state was on 16 yrs ago. Going back will be a short- & long-term disaster for Wis.

A great way to start the first weekend of June, courtesy of @DairylandSent What a crazy 9th & 10th inning finale to game one in Colorado. Going into the 9th the Brewers had managed only one hit. No quit in this team!
