Two illegal immigrants busted trying to smuggle 693,000 dollars worth of narcotics.
When a Florida Highway Patrol trooper pulled over a black Jeep Cherokee for having no registration found in the system, the driver—identified as Maurilio Garcia-Torres—gave conflicting stories about where he lived.
He claimed to reside in Arizona but handed over a Washington state driver’s license. Both Garcia-Torres and his female passenger, Ivania Riestra-Garcia, were later identified by authorities as illegal immigrants.
Things took a major turn when FHP K-9 Trooper Viken conducted an open-air sniff around the Jeep. Viken gave a positive alert at the rear of the vehicle, giving troopers probable cause for a physical search.
Inside the trunk, troopers uncovered a bag containing four heavily wrapped packages. Inside was a staggering 5.5 pounds (2.5 kilograms) of heroin with an estimated street value of roughly $693,000.
Once placed under arrest, the emotional weight of the situation hit the passenger. Caught on camera in the back of the patrol unit, she broke down crying, claiming she was just "in the wrong place at the wrong f*cking time," insisting she had no idea the drugs were there, and panicking over how this would completely derail her life.
Both individuals were booked into the Hernando County Jail and hit with severe felony charges:
Trafficking in Heroin (4 grams or more)
Unlawful Distribution of Heroin
Possession of a Structure or Vehicle Known to Traffic Drugs
Garcia-Torres was also cited for driving without a valid license, and federal immigration detainers (ICE holds) were immediately placed on both suspects.
Because 2.5 kilograms of heroin blows past Florida's highest statutory threshold for drug trafficking, a conviction on the primary charge carries a crushing 25-year mandatory minimum prison sentence and a $500,000 fine. In addition to the criminal charges, the state launched civil asset forfeiture proceedings to permanently seize the Jeep.
Once any potential prison sentences are served, both will face immediate deportation proceedings.
