#Job Opening: Historian of the Black Diaspora in the Era of the Atlantic Slave Trade in the Department of History at Dartmouth College (@dartmouth) --bit.ly/31D5bgr@BlkPerspectives
I am proud to work in the Harriet Tubman Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. This has been years in the making: the decision and commitment, then the process of getting university policies changed to allow for honorific naming that is not for a donor.
.@UofMaryland names academic department after legendary Marylander Harriet Tubman. Tubman’s legacy will be incorporated into curricula, programming and service impacting the entire campus. go.umd.edu/5DR#IAmARHU
ACADEMIC MUTUAL AID: i started this community resource as an alternative to Zoom guest lecturing. between shelter-in-place, kids running wild in the house, & everyone being stretched to the limit, it can get unsustainable.

Me: how was your Spanish test?
Son: (confident) I think I did pretty well.
Me: oh?
Son: yup, it was multiple choice in Google Forms and Google offered to translate the page for me.
Between 2007-2016 only 22% of all @ERC_Research grantees were women. Appaling. Yet in his 2019 report the ERC President said the council had finally become "gender neutral". Is that so? /1
Depriving ppl of basic necessities (housing, healthcare, food, clean water, living wages) is a form of social control. Please understand this. Pouring money into police & prisons while denying ppl a decent quality of life is done to control ppl & limit their options in life.
JUST IN: @UofCalifornia must immediately suspend all use of SAT/ACT scores for admissions and scholarships, judge rules. Preliminary injunction comes in case involving students with disabilities but applies to all California applicants. lat.ms/3bgWvzv
Repair. Envision. Examine. Involve. Horizontalize. Necessary verbs for doing better right now, in academia, our relationships, our communities. Other verbs I want more of: slowing down, naming what is, attuning
My kid started Jr. High last week. He couldn't stop talking about how much he loved his History teacher.
This afternoon we found him in tears, overcome by stress and self-doubt. His grade for his first short answer homework: 50/100.
...It was graded by an @EdgenuityInc algorithm.
I should add that I told him how to game the @EdgenuityInc algorithm: write long answers, include lots of proper names, read the "right" answers and replicate them. This evening he got 80/100, a 30-point spread. What is he learning here?
Algorithm update. He cracked it: Two full sentences, followed by a word salad of all possibly applicable keywords. 100% on every assignment. Students on @EdgenuityInc, there's your ticket. He went from an F to an A without learning a thing.
If I could repair my department - all departments - this is what I would want: A community that resists the burgeoning academic audit culture, makes a case for slow and careful work, and fights for credit and acknowledgement of new forms of public scholarship.
A department whose business is conducted transparently and inclusively, inviting graduate students, undergraduates and lecturers whenever feasible to discuss and decide on our policies and priorities.
A department that is accountable to the local and international communities, which we study and serve. A department that is equitable, inclusive and just.
