Quite a good example of why context matters. UK testing far more than other countries, so all else equal we tend to have comparatively high cases nos. Look at cases as % of tests or hospitalisations or deaths & charts are different. Rising, yes. But nothing like that case chart

£10,000 fines for Covid-19 offences: It appears that magistrates are not seeing the full picture before passing sentence, in closed-door hearings when no lawyers are present.

PM said today case growth was running ahead of projections laid out with unlocking timetable. What he didn’t point out is that hospitalisations are in line with the best-case scenario from Imperial for SPI-M in Feb. This could still change. But that’s where we are vs expectations

There we have it. According to @borisjohnson the UK hasn’t passed the four tests laid out in Feb when the reopening timetable was announced. A pretty clear pass on tests one and two (vaccines) and a pretty clear fail on test four (variants). Test three unclear. Reopening delayed.

If I'd suggested 18 months ago that magistrates were dishing out £10k fines in private hearings; to defendants without legal representation & sometimes unaware it's happening; in a whole process kept secret from the public, it'd have been laughable. That's now a reality.

A thread. @wellcometrust kindly funded me for 13 yrs on MH projects. It’s also funded decades of research on social & economic determinants of health, long-term impacts of poverty, unemployment, stress, loneliness & isolation. I’m aghast re the lack of focus on these things 1/

Normal is the thing for me: society needs to return to enjoyment, to socialising freely, to freedom and love. That’s what we’re doing this for. Without that, we’re nothing.

Why is nobody bothering to distinguish between the virus and the disease anymore? Everything is meaningless if you don't do this. We need to know who has Covid-19. Not who might, possibly, have fragments of the virus Sars-CoV-2, that can lead to the disease, Covid-19.

You can't put a price on human life. Except you can. And we do, or at least we usually do. But during this pandemic, strange as this might sound, we stopped doing that. Here's why this matters. My @thetimes column: thetimes.co.uk/article/322ab…

But only 72% of tests trigger all 3 genes. When you back off to 2 or 1 gene for a positive, you get more positives. Does this impact our understanding of its more rapid spread? medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

Since the days of Lord May (1995-2000), U.K. government scientific advice has been over-dominated by modellers. Time for a total reset after the pandemic to get some proper scientists (those with knowledge of the real world) back on top.
