Back at the camp, no one spoke during the journey home. Only silence. And grief. Days later, officers visited Douglas’ village. His mother saw the military vehicle approaching and her hands began to tremble. Deep down… She already knew. When they handed her his folded uniform and personal belongings, she searched desperately for his voice, his smile… just anything to show he's alive. Then she found the old photograph he always carried. Behind it, Douglas had written: “Mama, if I return, we will celebrate. If I don’t… know that your son died trying to protect others.” The old woman collapsed in tears, holding the photo to her chest, screaming ontop or her voice "Douglass no, please, don't do this to me"!
