A $300 traffic ticket can quickly balloon to a debt of over $1,000 when you’re already struggling financially and fines and fees continue to pile up. Drema’s story is another example of why it’s so important to adopt this rule @JusticeCBeasley. #DontDelayAbilityToPay

51,000 people currently on probation can not afford over $2,000 in debt
The median total owed in financial obligations for those on felony probation is $2,400 . Having a record makes gaining employment difficult, making it difficult to pay these fees, keeping people trapped in cycles of poverty. @JusticeCBeasley its time to #EndCriminalJusticeDebtNC

A recent analysis by the Duke University Law School shows substantial racial differences in fines and 1/3 of such are never collected. @JusticeCBeasley, to have a justice system that’s equitable for everyone, we need the immediate adoption of the ability to pay rule.

Since 1999, the number of criminal court fees has increased from 4 to 45 and the base cost for use of court has increased from $61 to $173, oftentimes on the backs of those least able to pay. @JusticeCBeasley It’s time to #EndCriminalJusticeDebtNC.
