AG Andrea Campbell’s office just filed arguments warning that if the Supreme Judicial Court allows Auditor Diana DiZoglio’s lawsuit against the Legislature to proceed, it could dramatically undermine the Attorney General’s power. They claim it would encourage other state officials to pursue their own “self-help” lawsuits in court instead of letting the AG control the state’s legal strategy. Translation: 72% of Massachusetts voters demanded transparency and accountability from the Legislature. The AG certified that ballot question. Now they’re saying letting the Auditor actually do her job threatens the AG’s authority? Sounds less like protecting the rule of law and more like protecting whatever they don’t want the public to see. Why is the Attorney General more worried about her power than about giving voters the independent audit they overwhelmingly approved? What exactly are they so afraid of us finding out?
