I want to introduce you to Steve. Heβs 83. His wife died a few months ago and he comes to this lodge in Spring Mill, Indiana and draws. He taught art in Terre Haute, IN his whole life. 1929 #Indy500 winner Ray Keech was fatally injured at Altoona Speedway on June 15, 1929 - just 16 days after winning the "500"
Keech represents the shortest reign as "500 Champion" (16 days). Other short reigns include those of Joe Boyer, George Robson, Dan Wheldon, and Gaston Chevrolet (all of whom were killed in racing accidents later the same season).
The shortest "reign" for an Indy 500 winner who was in the race the following year was 2020 winner Takuma Sato (280 days) because the 2020 was held Aug. 23rd.
Not counting 1981, the shortest reign for winner in a May race was Bobby Rahal. The 1986 race was postponed until May 31, and the 1987 race was held May 24 (the earliest it can fall). Resulting in a reign of only 358 days.
