Small Tort action in the garden today, just two seen (unless I see three together any more records will be a double count...).

White Admiral - Dene Park. 3 in the car park meadow bramble, 2 in the master oak area, 0 in the felled area...
Lots to see. Long Horned Bee was a first for me in that area, expect they have been recorded before - watch.flops.cover on Meadow Vetchling.

The rain held off, and while most insects notably lower after a few days rain and cooler conditions, new for year were Ringlet, Marbled White and Small Skipper. Bumbles were doing well, and bee orchids still popping up.

Between the rain showers the garden higjlight was seeing this ladybird emerge, I don't recall seeing this before. Much like a dragonfly, much bigger than its case. Now eat the aphids...

Good to see a few Small Tortoiseshell this spring - only occasionally numerous the past few years - seems to involve luck, right place, right time.

Mount Caburn - great walking, views and nature. Corn Bunting and Red Kite the birding highlights. Weather was changeable to say the least, very windy, you would not want to see those storm clouds in winter.
Five-spot Burnet, Mother Shipton and Burnet Companion - several of each at South Swale. Wall Brown was taking a break, with Small Heath and Painted Lady vying for top spot. Mow mow May!

Lizard and Pyramidal Orchids, some just coming in to flower. Adders Tongue Fern having a good year too. Bee, Man and White and Broad-leaved Helleborine also seen here. Roadside nature reserve.

Ruderal (workers) & Moss Carder (queen) bumblebees at South Swale (inc bee road) yesterday. Long Horn Bees too.
The Ruderal bumblebee has not been seen there for some time, welcome back!

I think this is Osmia leaiana, Orange-vented Mason Bee - found this female clinging to my t-shirt after cleaning the pond. Tried to move her to a plant, but seemed determined to stay on my hand for a while. Nice garden record.

Kneeling down for the White Helleborine shot, and noticed some movement in front on the shady floor - mating Geoff's - Albonia geoffrella (Common Tubic).

Orange Beauty, Commophila aeneana - not a species I had seen before, nationally scarce and a new location for Kent. Feed in the roots of Ragwort. On the roadside nature reserve (RNR) famous for its Lizards.

Sussex Emerald caterpillar consuming a plant its not supposed to - insect highlight of a 33deg survey at Stodmarsh today. Cuckoo, Bittern, Marsh Harriers, Hobbies and Cattle Egret the bird highlights, the first two heard rather than seen.

Sussex Emerald caterpillar, on its more usual, for Kent, Wild Carrot (fingers for scale and focus - my finding skills were woeful today - all finds by others). Caterpillar will also use Ragwort - and other plants abroad.
