Day 1 of the Division I Baseball Championship is the most underrated day on the sports calendar.

From 1985 to 2010 (26 tournaments), 12 seeds went 2-2 or better against the 5 seeds in the first round 10 times. Since 2011 (15 tournaments), that has happened 8 times. 11 seeds went 2-2 or better against 6 seeds 9 times from 1985-2010, while doing it 11 times since 2011.
So many first round upsets out of 11 and 12 seeds since 1985 (.372 and .354 win percentage respectively). It's what makes March Madness great. Now, rather than have a few days to practice, prepare and game plan, they get extra travel and an extra game. The 5 and 6 seeds get to rest and wait.

The numbers speak for themselves. Thank you to everyone who watched and attended the games and/or ancillary events, those who volunteered, and to the media who covered the event. And a special shout out to my colleagues who know how to stage a first-class event.

I do think the Final 4 should always be in a warm weather city. Good weather just adds to the atmosphere. Is it too late to change next year from Detroit, @DavidWorlock? Last time it was there, I needed my snow shovel!

With Tennessee's loss today, the 1986 LSU team remains the only team in the modern era (1985-present) to defeat a 1, 2, and 3 seed while advancing to the Final Four.

Not even a top three hardest this decade based on opponent seeds. Villanova played 15, 7, 11, 5 in 2022. Kansas played 16, 9, 4, 10 in 2022. Houston played 15, 10, 11, 12 to be the first and only team to reach a Final Four while playing all double-digit seeds.
Illinois… Path to the Final Four: • 14-seed Penn • 11-seed VCU • 2-seed Houston • 9-seed Iowa 1 of the easiest paths we have ever seen.

The 74 combined three-pointers in the Michigan-Alabama is the second-most in tournament history, trailing only last year's Alabama-BYU game (81). Alabama had 47 of those attempts, second only to its 51 tries in the BYU game.
