Residents of Lahaina expect the recovery efforts/debris clean up to take at least 1 yr to be completed with EPA/FEMA/USACE. I’ve spoke with my contacts at USACE and they mentioned 6-8 months for the debris clean up after EPA does their part with the “toxic ash.” For the meantime for those displaced and lost homes will be housed at temporary housing units/hotels/affordable housings. Nani Medeiros resigned as Hawaii’s Hawaii Chief Housing Officer (appointed and not elected in that position) due to “bullying and threats.” She hosted the Aug 29, Build Beyond Barriers Working Group meeting at the big island in which a few Lahaina residents were able to travel and attend, rather than at Maui. Sierra Club and American Civil Liberties Union filed lawsuits challenging the legality of the order and the working group’s power to approve housing projects, as well as Medeiros’ authority as chair of the group. Josh Green’s July 17 Emergency Proclamation Relating to Housing was heavily criticized by Lahaina residents during the meeting, alleging the governor exceeded his power to suspend laws during times of “imminent danger or threat of an emergency or disaster.” Using the housing shortages as an emergency. New York City has new rules for Airbnb short term rentals, under Local Law 18 effective Sep 5, 2023. The following rules are; 1. Airbnb will no longer be available for stays of less than 30 days unless property owners have gone through the city’s application process and received approval in the form of an official registration number. 2. More than two guests at a time are not allowed, no families allowed. 3. Hosts must also commit to being physically present in the home for the duration of the rental, sharing living quarters with their guest. 4. Hosts who violate the rules could face fines up to $5,000 for repeat offenders, and platforms could be fined up to $1,500 for transactions involving illegal rentals. This is a major blow for the hosts and will significantly hurt the tourism economy of New York City. Travelers will now find less picking when vacationing in NYC.
